Notes on Terminology
Throughout this book the terminology generally used is that of British English. The
American industry uses different names and to save confusion a cross-reference is given below.
An example is the naming of the various supply voltages. In the early days, before the widespread availability of a public mains AC supply, valve equipment – such as the household wireless receiver – operated from batteries. The early valve wireless sets used a mixture of supply voltages. The filament (heater) supply was usually a 2V or 4V supply. It was common to use a 1-cell or 2-cell lead-acid battery, which would be recharged by the local wireless shop when it was discharged. The common name for this was an accumulator, hence the American heater voltage was known as the A+ supply. The high voltage supply was generally a disposable carbon-pile battery, hence the B+ supply in American parlance. A grid bias battery was also a carbon-pile type and denoted the C- supply. The voltage was given as an EMF: hence, in many older American books the denotation of voltage is either E or e.
